Mike was a member of Na Koa o Pu'ukohola Heiau when he participated in a ceremony for the koa tree that was traditionally carved into the sailing canoe Mauloa. From that ceremony, he and his father joined the educational organization Na Kalai Wa'a Moku o Keawe which is dedicated to the perpetuation of cultural values and practices of voyaging in Hawai'i. Mike has been involved in PVS ever since and has made many open ocean voyagaes including the voyaging canoe Makali'i's maiden voyage to Tahiti.
