Russell first sailed on Hōkūleʻa in 1994 when he was 16 years old. Five years later he sailed on his first deep sea voyage from Hilo to Nuku Hiva. To Russell, Hōkūleʻa is about connecting people and places while illustrating that indigenous knowledge can still empower us today. He sees the canoe as a vessel that carries the knowledge and stories she collects on her voyage, taking them on board and learning from them while also sharing them with the rest of the communities she visits around the world.
When out at sea, Russell misses being with his family. Back on land, Russell misses the personal challenges that enable him to learn more about himself.
