To Wayne, Hōkūleʻa means the promise of continuing Hawaiian sailing culture. Through the Worldwide Voyage, he hopes to see the recognition of Hawaiian culture, which he hopes will inspires the youth to perpetuate in the future. On past voyages, Wayne has seen sailing emphasis the importance of working together and he has come to see the importance of the canoe in continuing Hawaiian culture.
While out at sea, Wayne misses poke bowls, and while back on land he misses his waʻa family and friends.
