Zane first sailed on Hōkūleʻa in Summer 2013, when he had the opportunity to learn from some of the wisest sailors he knew on an interisland sail. To Zane, Hōkūleʻa is about interconnection. Physically, she takes crew around the world, connecting new places. Culturally, she connects us to the tradition of Polynesian voyaging and draws us closer to the ocean and our environment. He hopes that through the Worldwide Voyage, Hōkūleʻa can inspire dialogues about culture, the environment and social issues.
While out at sea, Zane misses a bed that is long enough to sleep comfortably on. Back on land, he misses the camaraderie and bond forged between crewmembers as soon as he stepped foot on the waʻa.
